Shrine of Saint John the Russian
Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Ρώσος
Prokopi was settled in 1924 by Greek refugees from Cappadocia, who brought with them the relics of a Russian soldier taken prisoner by the Ottomans in the eighteenth century and venerated as a saint. The church built for him draws tens of thousands of pilgrims, many of them walking the last stretch, around his feast at the end of May. Outside those days it is quiet and the village, with its Victorian-era English estate, is worth a stop.
