Zakynthos After the Navagio Closure: What Is Still Worth Your Time

ΑThe short version

Navagio — Shipwreck Beach — is closed to landing and swimming until 31 October 2026 because of landslide risk from the cliffs above it. Boats cannot put passengers ashore, and you cannot swim there. What you can still do is the thing most people remember anyway: look down on it from the clifftop viewing platform.

That changes the shape of a Zakynthos trip, but it does not ruin it. The island's best days were never only about one cove. The Blue Caves, the rock pools of Porto Limnionas, the sea caves at Keri and the turtle beaches of the south are all open, and several are better without the Navagio boat traffic stacking up around them. ΒWhat exactly is closed at Navagio

• Closed until 31 October 2026: landing on the beach and swimming there. The reason is safety — rockfalls from the surrounding cliffs.
• Boats: cannot land. Reports differ on how close excursion boats may approach, so do not rely on any particular distance, and be sceptical of any seller who implies you will set foot on the sand.
• Open: the viewpoint above the bay, reached by road.

If you are planning for after October 2026, check the latest local announcements before you book anything that depends on landing. Closures of this kind are reviewed, not automatically lifted.

ΓThe viewpoint, done properly

The Navagio viewpoint sits on the island's north-west cliffs, high above the beach itself. The platform is small and exposed, the drop is sheer, and the view — the rusting wreck on white sand inside a ring of pale limestone — is exactly as dramatic as the photographs.

A few rules of thumb:

• Go early or late. Tour coaches bunch up from late morning; the light is also flatter at midday.
• Stay behind the barriers. The edge beyond the platform is crumbling limestone, the very reason the beach below is shut. No photograph is worth stepping past them.
• Make a morning of the north-west. The Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon is close by, and the inland villages on the way have kept a slower, agricultural rhythm that the south coast lost long ago.
• Bring water and a hat. There is little shade on the cliffs in summer.

ΔBlue Caves and the north-east

The Blue Caves, at Cape Skinari on the northern tip, are the obvious replacement for a Navagio boat day. Small boats leave from the little harbours nearby and slip into sea arches where the water turns an electric blue; on calm days you can usually swim. Morning is best, both for the light inside the caves and for the sea, which tends to pick up as the day goes on. If the wind is up, the trips simply do not run — keep a flexible day in hand.

Heading back down the east coast, Xigia is a small pebble cove where sulphur springs run into the sea. You will smell it before you see it; many people swear by the water, others find one swim enough.

ΕThe west coast: rocks, not sand

Porto Limnionas is not a beach in the towel-on-sand sense. It is a narrow rocky inlet where you swim off flat stone ledges into very clear, deep water — closer in spirit to a Cycladic swimming spot than to the long sands of the south. It is small, parking is tight, and by early afternoon in August it is full. Go in the morning, wear water shoes, and do not expect sunbed rows.

The west coast is also where Zakynthos does sunsets. The Cross of Kampi stands on a cliff above the sea near the village of Kampi; arrive a good half hour before the sun goes down if you want a spot along the wall.

ΣΤThe south: Keri caves and Laganas Bay

At the south-western tip, the Keri caves are the southern counterpart to the Blue Caves: sea caves and arches under tall cliffs, visited by small boats from the Keri area, with the Mizithres rock stacks nearby. The boats here are small and the trips short, which makes them a good option for families who do not want a full day at sea.

East of Keri, Laganas Bay is the heart of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, created to protect the loggerhead turtles that nest on its beaches. Hatching typically runs from late July into October.

ΖTurtles, Gerakas and the rules that matter

Gerakas, at the tip of the Vasilikos peninsula, is the beach to choose if the turtles are part of why you came. It is a long, soft sand beach backed by clay cliffs, and it is one of the protected nesting beaches, so it feels very different from the resorts: fewer facilities, fewer people, more rules.

The marine park's regulations are reported slightly differently from year to year, so treat the following as typical and follow what is posted at the entrance:

• Nesting beaches are closed at night during the season, typically from May to October.
• Umbrellas and sunbeds are restricted to a narrow band close to the waterline; stay off the back of the beach, where nests are.
• Do not dig, do not leave holes or sandcastles, take your rubbish, and never use lights on the beach after dark.
• On boat trips, choose operators who keep their distance from turtles and do not chase or feed them.

About Laganas. The Laganas strip is the island's nightlife centre, and it sits right next to a nesting beach. If you want late nights, it delivers; if you want turtles, quiet or a family holiday, base yourself elsewhere — Vasilikos, the north-east, or Zakynthos Town.

ΗA four-day plan without Navagio's beach

1. 1Day one — north-west and sunset. Navagio viewpoint early, the monastery at Krimnon, lunch in an inland village, sunset at Kampi.
2. 2Day two — Blue Caves. Morning boat from the north-east, swim, then a slow drive back down the east coast with a stop at Xigia.
3. 3Day three — Vasilikos. A full day at Gerakas, leaving before dusk when the beach closes.
4. 4Day four — the south-west. Porto Limnionas first thing, then a short boat trip into the Keri caves.

ΘGetting there

Zakynthos airport has direct summer flights from many European cities, and the Levante ferry from Kyllini on the Peloponnese takes about an hour and a quarter — the route to use if you are driving.
