Fonias Waterfalls
Καταρράκτης Φονιά
The classic Samothraki walk. From the bridge by the ruined tower a marked path follows the Fonias torrent upstream through plane trees and boulders to the first waterfall, a drop of about twelve metres into a deep green pool — roughly forty minutes each way, with some scrambling and a couple of stream crossings. The water is cold enough to take your breath. Fonias means killer: the river floods fast and without warning after rain, and people have drowned here. Do not go up after a storm, and do not continue to the upper falls without a guide.
