The Best Sunset Spots in Greece — and How to Beat the Crowds
Oia, Imerovigli, Sounion, Milos's Plaka, Lefkada's cliffs, Corfu's west coast and more: where to watch the sun go down in Greece, and when to arrive.

The short version
Greece's west-facing cliffs, castles and temples make it one of Europe's great sunset countries — and the famous spots know it. The difference between a moving evening and a shoving match is usually where exactly you stand and how early you arrive.
- Most famous: Oia, Santorini. Arrive very early or watch from somewhere else.
- Best alternative on Santorini: Imerovigli and Skaros Rock, or the Akrotiri lighthouse.
- Best from Athens: the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, about 70 km away.
- Best village sunset: Plaka on Milos.
- Most dramatic cliffs: Cape Lefkatas and the west coast of Lefkada.
- Greenest: Corfu's west coast.
- Most atmospheric in a town: Little Venice on Mykonos, or the Portara on Naxos.

Oia, Santorini
The most photographed sunset in Greece happens over the caldera from the northern tip of Santorini. The classic viewpoint is the ruined Castle of Oia, which fills up long before the sun gets low — on summer evenings, people stake out the walls an hour or more in advance. When the sun disappears, the crowd applauds, and then everyone tries to leave by the same narrow lanes and the same bus stop at the same moment.
How to do it well:
- Arrive very early and accept that you are waiting, or skip the castle and find a spot along the lanes further east, where the view is nearly as good.
- Book a terrace for dinner or drinks, and make sure your reservation covers the actual sunset time.
- Stay late. Let the crowd drain for 30–45 minutes before you move.
- Plan the ride home in advance; taxis and buses are stretched after sunset.
- Watch from the water. A sunset sail on the caldera avoids the crush entirely.
Earlier in the day, cruise traffic adds to the pressure on Oia and Fira. Our piece on the Santorini cruise fee and daily cap explains how to time your visits.
Imerovigli and the Akrotiri lighthouse
Imerovigli, the highest village on the caldera rim, gives you the same light with a fraction of Oia's crowd. Walk out towards Skaros Rock — the headland where a medieval castle once stood — and you have a view back along the whole caldera. The path involves steps and uneven ground, so bring shoes, not sandals.
At the island's south-western tip, the Akrotiri lighthouse looks out over open sea, far from the villages. It is not a secret any more, and parking is limited, but it feels wilder than anywhere on the rim.
Cape Sounion, Attica
The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion stands on a headland at the southern tip of Attica, about 70 km from central Athens, and sunset there is the classic Athenian evening trip. The site is open until sunset; the ticket is around €20 in summer and around €10 in winter, but check before you go. It gets crowded, especially at weekends and in July and August. Arrive at least an hour early, walk around the temple while the light is still high, then choose your spot on the western side. Bring a layer: the cape is exposed and breezy.
If you cannot leave the city, Mount Lycabettus and Philopappos Hill give you sunset over Athens with the Acropolis in the frame. See Athens for more.
Plaka, Milos
Plaka, the hilltop capital of Milos, has one of the best village sunsets in the Cyclades. Climb from the lanes to the church and the ruins of the Venetian castle at the top, and the view opens west over the Gulf of Milos and the sea beyond. The climb is short but steep, and the small space at the summit fills in high summer, so go up well before sunset. Afterwards, the village is at its best for dinner.
Lefkada's west coast
The west coast of Lefkada is a long line of white cliffs dropping into very blue water, and it faces the open Ionian. At the southern tip, Cape Lefkatas has a lighthouse on a headland linked in legend to the poet Sappho's leap. It is a long, winding drive, but the sunset over nothing but sea is worth it. Closer to the beach towns, the cliffs above Porto Katsiki make a spectacular stop in the early evening. Lefkada is reached over a bridge from the mainland, so it is an easy sunset destination for road-trippers.
Corfu's west coast
Corfu Town faces east, so for sunset you need to cross the island. The west coast is greener and softer than the Cyclades: olive groves, cypresses and cliffs above bays.
- Pelekas: the hill above the village, known as the Kaiser's Throne, gives a wide view over the west coast and the interior.
- Angelokastro: a Byzantine castle on a crag near Paleokastritsa, with the sea on three sides. Check opening hours before you go.
- The west-coast beaches — Glyfada, Agios Gordios and others — are simple places to watch the sun go down with your feet in the sand.
Lindos, Rhodes
The Acropolis of Lindos rises above one of the most beautiful villages in the Dodecanese. The ticket is €20, and the site's opening hours may not reach sunset, so check the day's schedule. The better plan for sunset is to visit the acropolis earlier in the day, when it is cooler, and then watch the evening light from the village rooftops or the Lindos viewpoint above the bay.
Mykonos and Naxos: sunset in town
- Mykonos: the waterfront bars of Little Venice face west over the sea, with the windmills on the ridge behind. It is busy and expensive, and spray can reach the front tables on windy days, but it is a genuine Mykonos moment. The windmills themselves are a less formal alternative.
- Naxos: the Portara, the great marble doorway of an unfinished temple on the islet by Naxos harbour, frames the setting sun. It is a short walk from the port along a causeway and busy on summer evenings, but spacious enough to find a spot.
How to beat the sunset crowds anywhere
- Check the sunset time for the exact date. It changes by more than an hour between June and October.
- Arrive an hour early at famous spots, or 20 minutes before at quieter ones.
- Face the right way. In midsummer the sun sets further to the north-west; in autumn, further south-west. Check that your viewpoint is not blocked by a headland.
- Stay after the sun has gone. The afterglow is often the best light, and the crowd has left.
- Watch from a boat on the islands with sunset cruises.
- Have a plan for getting back, especially in Oia, at Sounion and on remote headlands.

On summer evenings the castle viewpoint fills an hour or more before sunset. Arrive early, book a terrace, or watch from the lanes further east or from a boat on the caldera.
Can you watch the sunset at Cape Sounion?
Yes. The site is open until sunset. The ticket is around €20 in summer and around €10 in winter; check before you go. Prices checked September 2026.
Is there a good sunset spot in Athens itself?
