The short version

This is the comparison where the answer depends less on taste than on your calendar.

  • One week, one flight, no ambitions to drive 200 km a day? Rhodes. It is big enough to feel varied and small enough that one base covers it.
  • Ten days or more, or a second visit, and you actually want to drive? Crete. It is not one island so much as four regions in a row, and it punishes anyone who tries to see it in a week.

What is wrong with each. Crete is enormous, and the most common mistake visitors make is booking a hotel in Chania and a day trip to Knossos, which is a round trip of close to 300 km on a road that is slower than the map suggests. Rhodes is the opposite problem: its east coast is one of the most heavily packaged shores in Greece, its Old Town is a cruise destination that empties and refills by the hour, and the south-east still carries scars from the July 2023 wildfires that forced the evacuation of around 19,000 people.

Scale, honestly

Crete runs roughly 260 km end to end, and the mountains in the middle mean you drive around things rather than across them. In practice it is four holidays: Chania in the west for the Venetian harbour, the White Mountains and the famous beaches; Rethymno in the middle for the old town and the quietest stretch of north coast; Heraklion for the Minoan sites and the museum; and Lasithi in the east for Elounda, Spinalonga and the drier, emptier end. Pick one. Two is possible in a fortnight. Four is a transfer holiday.

Rhodes is about 80 km long, and that is the whole argument for it. From a base near Rhodes Town or Faliraki you can reach Lindos, the butterfly valley, the Kamiros ruins and the south-west coast on separate days without moving hotels. The whole island is a series of day trips, which is exactly what a one-week holiday wants.

The headline sights

Crete's is Knossos, the Minoan palace outside Heraklion, inscribed by UNESCO in July 2025 as part of the Minoan Palatial Centres. Entry is €20 (reduced €10), and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is a separate €20 with timed slots — the old combined ticket is no longer valid. Prices checked September 2026. See the museum; the palace makes far more sense afterwards.

Rhodes's is the Medieval City, a UNESCO site since 1988 and the best-preserved walled town in the eastern Mediterranean. The Palace of the Grand Master is a €20 package covering the museum and Medieval Town sites, and the Acropolis of Lindos above its white village is another €20, with timed entry slots in use from 2026. Our guide to Rhodes Old Town and Lindos handles the timing.

The difference is not quality, it is density. Rhodes's two great sights are about 50 km apart. Crete's are scattered across a day's driving.

Beaches and landscape

Crete wins on landscape outright. Balos and Elafonissi in the west are the kind of places people plan a trip around, the Samaria Gorge is the best long walk on any Greek island, and the south coast has beaches reachable only by boat or footpath. The caveats are real: Balos is a rough road or a boat from Kissamos, both ends of Crete are a long way from the other, and Samaria closes on extreme heat and high-wind days, as do other gorges. Our best beaches in Crete guide covers access honestly.

Rhodes's beaches are easier and less spectacular. The east coast has sand and organised facilities in a near-continuous line; the west coast is windier, rockier and better for windsurfing than for lying down. It is a reliable swimming island rather than a thrilling one.

Heat, wind and season

Rhodes is the warmer island at both ends of the year. Average highs reach 30.4 °C in July and 30.7 °C in August, and October still averages 24.5 °C with a sea around 24 °C — the Dodecanese stays swimmable later than almost anywhere in Greece. Heraklion runs slightly cooler in summer, 28.9 °C in July, with essentially no rain in high season: 0.8 mm in July against 91 mm in January.

Crete's heat problem is inland and in the gorges, not on the coast; Rhodes's is in a treeless old town in the early afternoon. Both are fine in May, June, September and October, which is when either island is at its best.

Getting there, and the ferry question

Both have large airports with direct summer flights from much of Europe, and Rhodes (RHO), Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ) all take seasonal charters from Romania — schedules change yearly, so check the airline.

By sea, Crete is the practical one: Piraeus to Heraklion takes about 7h50 on a fast boat and around 9 hours overnight, with deck fares from roughly €28 to €44, while Piraeus to Chania at Souda runs 7 to 9h30 from around €37 (prices checked September 2026). The overnight boat with a cabin is a genuinely good way to arrive. Rhodes is much further out in the Dodecanese and the sailing is long; most people fly, and the ferries page has the operators if you want to try it anyway.

Cost

Rhodes is the cheaper island for a packaged week, and Crete the cheaper one for independent travel outside the big resort belts. Neither gets the reduced island VAT rate — it applies on Kos, Symi, Leros, Patmos, Karpathos and other small Dodecanese and north Aegean islands, but explicitly not on Rhodes or Crete. Both carry the climate resilience fee per room per night: €2 for rooms and apartments, €10 at a 4-star and €15 at a 5-star from April to October (checked September 2026). More on the prices page.

Who should pick which

Choose Rhodes if you have a week, you want one hotel and a hire car for three of the days, you are travelling in October and want warm sea, or a medieval walled town sounds better to you than a Bronze Age palace. Add a day on Symi, 45 minutes to 1h30 away from around €6 — it is the best cheap day trip in the Dodecanese.

Choose Crete if you have ten days or more, you want mountains as well as sea, you intend to drive, or you care about the Minoans. Then commit to one region: west for scenery and beaches, centre for sites, east for quiet.

Choose neither if you want to island-hop. Both are terminal destinations rather than stepping stones, and the Cyclades will serve you better. The island finder will confirm it in a minute.

If you only remember one thing

Distance is the deciding factor, and it is the thing people underestimate. A week on Crete spent trying to see Crete is a week in a car. A week on Rhodes seeing Rhodes is a holiday. Decide which one your dates allow, then book accordingly — the Crete stay page and the Rhodes stay page are the place to start.

Prices, fees and rules in this piece were checked in September 2026. They change — confirm with the operator or site before you travel.

Frequently asked

Is Crete or Rhodes better for one week?

Rhodes. It is about 80 km long, so a single base covers the Old Town, Lindos and the west coast on separate days. A week on Crete only works if you stay in one region — west, centre or east — and ignore the rest.

Can you see Knossos on a day trip from Chania?

You can, but it is a round trip of close to 300 km and most of the day is spent driving. If the Minoan sites matter to you, base near Heraklion for part of the trip instead, and see the Archaeological Museum before the palace.

How much do the main sites cost?

Knossos is €20 (reduced €10) and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum another €20 with timed slots, the old combined ticket having been discontinued. On Rhodes, the Palace of the Grand Master is a €20 package and the Acropolis of Lindos €20. Prices checked September 2026.

Which island is warmer in October?

Rhodes. October averages a high of 24.5 °C there with a sea around 24 °C, so swimming is comfortable well into the month. Heraklion is a little cooler but still dry and mild, with almost no rain until late autumn.

Can you reach either island by ferry from Athens?

Crete easily: Piraeus to Heraklion is about 7h50 on a fast boat or around 9 hours overnight, deck fares roughly €28 to €44, and Piraeus to Souda near Chania 7 to 9h30 from around €37, prices checked September 2026. Rhodes is far out in the Dodecanese and the crossing is long, so most people fly.

Do either of them get the reduced island VAT rate?

No. The 30% island VAT reduction applies on Kos, Symi, Leros, Patmos, Karpathos and other small Dodecanese and north Aegean islands, but explicitly not on Rhodes or Crete.
