Samothraki vs Thassos: Two Islands, One Road From Romania

Both are a day's drive and a short ferry away. One is a beach island with a ring road, the other a 1,611 m mountain with waterfalls. They are not alternatives.

The short version

They sit in the same corner of the north Aegean, they are reached on the same route through Bulgaria, and almost nothing else about them is alike.

  • Samothraki is a mountain in the sea. Mount Fengari reaches 1,611 m, the highest point in the northern Aegean, the rain that falls on its granite comes back down as rivers, and you swim in cold rock pools under plane trees rather than on sunbeds. There is one ancient sanctuary of real international importance, a handful of beaches, and no resort trade to speak of.
  • Thassos is the beach island: round, green with pine and marble, a road all the way around the edge, clear water almost everywhere, and the full apparatus of a summer holiday. It has its own site in our network, thassos.online, which goes much deeper than this page can.

If you want a sunbed, a sandy beach and a taverna within walking distance of the room, Samothraki is the wrong island and nothing in this article will change that. If you want a holiday that involves walking shoes, Thassos will feel tame.

What is wrong with each

Samothraki has no airport, one ferry route, and a boat that stops running in strong northerlies — which in this part of the Aegean is not rare. Its roads are rough once you leave the north coast, its sandy beaches are on the far south side down a bad track, and in August it fills with Greek students and a large free-camping scene around Therma. There is very little to do after dark, and that is the point of the place, not a defect to be fixed.

Thassos has the opposite trouble. In the first half of August the ring road backs up, the good beaches are full by ten in the morning, and a very large number of Romanian and Bulgarian cars arrive at once. The island is small enough that if you dislike your base you are stuck with it for the week.

Getting there: the same road, a different ferry

Both start with the Makaza–Nymfaia crossing, the short way through Bulgaria. From Ruse to the border is around 365 km, roughly five and a quarter hours, and the pass takes cars only — no trucks over 3.5 tonnes. Our from Romania page has the route detail and the Bulgarian vignette guide the 2026 rates, which rose 30% on 1 August 2026.

For Thassos you continue to Keramoti, east of Kavala. The crossing to Limenas takes 35 to 40 minutes and costs €6 for an adult, €3 for a child and €22 for a car up to 4.25 m, with longer vehicles at €27; tickets are bought at the port and summer sailings are frequent. A second route runs from Kavala to Prinos. Kavala airport (KVA) is about 12 km from Keramoti. Prices checked September 2026.

For Samothraki you carry on east to Alexandroupoli and take the boat to Kamariotissa; the crossing is roughly two hours and the ferry carries cars. Check the timetable before you fix dates — some days have a single sailing, and the boat is cancelled when the north wind gets up. The ferries page has the operators for both.

The practical difference: Thassos is the shorter drive and the far more forgiving schedule. Samothraki adds two hours of road and a real possibility of being stuck a day at either end.

Samothraki: what you actually do

You walk and you swim in fresh water. The island's signature is the vathres, rock pools cut by mountain torrents, usually with a waterfall at the head. From the bridge by the Fonias tower a marked path reaches the first waterfall in about forty minutes, and the pool beneath it is deep and extremely cold. Gria Vathra above Therma is the easy, busy one; Kleidosi takes more walking. Go in shoes you do not mind soaking, never after heavy rain, and do not attempt the upper Fonias pools without a guide.

The other reason to come is the Sanctuary of the Great Gods at Palaiopoli, which ran a mystery cult open to anyone, free or enslaved, Greek or not. It was here, in 1863, that the Winged Victory was found; the statue has been in the Louvre ever since and a cast stands in the island museum. It is one of the strangest and least visited major sites in Greece.

The sand is in the south: Pachia Ammos is the long one, reached by rough road or by the small boat from Kamariotissa. The north coast is shingle. The full list is on the Samothraki beaches page, and where to sleep on the Samothraki stay page.

Thassos: what you actually do

You drive the ring road and you swim. Everything on Thassos is within an easy drive of everywhere else, which is the single best thing about it: one room, no transfers, and the whole island available as a day trip. The water on the north and east coasts is exceptionally clear, the interior is olive terraces and mountain villages, and there are enough tavernas, rooms and organised beaches that no part of the week needs planning. For the beach-by-beach detail, the villages and the practicalities of getting around, use thassos.online.

Who should pick which

Choose Samothraki if you walk, you would rather swim in a cold river pool than lie on a sunbed, you have an interest in the ancient world, or you want an island where nothing is organised for you. Go in June or September; August belongs to the campers.

Choose Thassos if you are travelling with children, you want the shortest road day and the most reliable ferry, you want clear water without earning it, or you simply want a beach holiday that works without research.

Choose neither if you want a resort with a pool and a kids' club and a beach bar — that is Kassandra in Halkidiki, covered in our Thassos vs Halkidiki comparison. The island finder will place you faster than a map will.

Can you do both?

Yes, and it is the best use of two weeks on this coast, because the two halves of the trip do completely different things to you. Do Samothraki first, while you still have the energy for the Fonias path, then drive back west to Keramoti and spend the second week on Thassos doing very little. Keep a spare day in the middle: the Alexandroupoli boat is the one that gets cancelled, and you do not want that day eating into the part of the holiday you came for.

Prices, fees and rules in this piece were checked in September 2026. They change — confirm with the operator or site before you travel.

Frequently asked

Can you drive to both Samothraki and Thassos from Romania?

Yes, on the same route. Both use the Makaza–Nymfaia crossing through Bulgaria — around 365 km from Ruse to the border, roughly five and a quarter hours — then a car ferry: Keramoti for Thassos, Alexandroupoli for Samothraki.

How long is the ferry to Samothraki?

Roughly two hours from Alexandroupoli to Kamariotissa, and the boat carries cars. Check the timetable before you book a room: some days have a single sailing, and the crossing is cancelled in strong northerlies.

Does Samothraki have good beaches?

A few, and they are not why people come. The sand is on the south coast, with Pachia Ammos the long one, reached by a rough road or by small boat; the north coast is shingle. The real swimming is in the mountain rock pools.

Which island suits a family with small children?

Thassos, clearly. It has shallow organised beaches, a short ferry, tavernas everywhere and a ring road that puts the whole island within an easy drive. Samothraki involves rough tracks, cold water and walking.

What is the Sanctuary of the Great Gods?

An ancient mystery cult site at Palaiopoli on Samothraki's north coast, open in antiquity to anyone regardless of status or origin. The Winged Victory now in the Louvre was found there in 1863, and a cast stands in the island museum.

When is the best time to go?

June and September for both. August fills Thassos with cars and Samothraki with students and campers, and the north Aegean cools earlier in autumn than the Dodecanese, so October is already late for swimming.
